Michael DeQuattro
Michael DeQuattro is an eclectic artist known for fusing together acoustic, electronic, and improvisational elements. He is able to move freely between classical, jazz, popular, and world idioms often weaving these styles together in his compositions. Providence Journal critic Channing Grey describes his work as “energetic” and “glittering”.
As a performer, he has played timpani and percussion for the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Rhode Island Festival Ballet Orchestra, Boston Festival Orchestra, and Rhode Island Philharmonic. He has also performed and recorded with numerous theater orchestras, jazz combos, rock bands, singer/song writers, folk musicians, electronic trio “East of Borneo”, international touring artist Jesse Liam, Carol Wincenc, Judith Stillman, Maria Spagania, The Moody Blues, and Duke Robillard among others. As an accompanist, Michael has worked with many modern dancers, dance companies and colleges. Among these are The Boston Conservatory, UMASS Amherst, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Bates College Dance Festival, Boston Ballet Theater, Dance Umbrella, Fusionworks, Bill T. Jones, Paul Taylor Dance Co., Mark Morris Dance Co., Martha Graham Dance Co., George Faison, Dudley Williams, Rachel Chavis, Sean Curran, and Jenny Rocha to name a few.
As a composer, his work has been heard at the Joyce SoHo in New York City, Green Street Studios in Cambridge, MA, the Dance Theater Workshop in New York City, Fringe Festival NYC, Festival Ballet’s Up Close on Hope Series, and the West End Theater’s Soaking Wet Series, NYC and Bath University. He is on the roster of New England Foundation for the Arts Meet the Composer, is a two-time recipient of the McCall/Johnson Fellowship Merit Award in Composition through the Rhode Island Foundation and a fellow of The Rhode Island Council on the Arts Fellowship in Composition.
He is currently the percussion chair in music and accompanies for dance at Rhode Island College. Previous accompaniment positions include The Boston Conservatory and 20 years of service for Roger Williams University. He has also taught at Salve Regina University, The Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School, the Community College of Rhode Island and Citrus Community College in Glendora California.
